NOTE: For multiplayer gameplay, it is highly recommended that you install Icewind Dale II using the “Full” installation option. (1.5GB)
Insert the disc labeled "Icewind Dale II Disc 1" into your CD/DVD-ROM drive and follow the onscreen instructions that follow. If you have disabled autorun support on your CD/DVD-ROM drive, find the autorun.exe application located in the root directory of Disc 1 and double click to launch the installer.
The Icewind Dale II autorun menu will allow you to perform the following options:
- Install *
- Play *
- Install DirectX
- View Readme
- Uninstall *
- Exit
* These options are enabled or disabled depending on whether the game has been installed or not.
Installation options:
- Full: This option installs all files to your hard disk. More hard disk space will be used but this will provide the shortest loading times. The full installation will require 1.5GB of disk space.During the installation a window will appear with the following message, "Please insert disc 2 ("Play") into your CD-ROM drive." When this window appears, insert the CD-ROM labeled Icewind Dale II Disc 2 into your CD/DVD-ROM drive. The “Path” should default to your CD/DVD-ROM drive letter. If you are encountering problems finishing the installation, please make sure the correct CD/DVD-ROM drive letter is being used for the “Path”. After the installation reaches 100%, you will be prompted one last time to insert the CD-ROM labeled Icewind Dale II Disc 1 into your CD/DVD-ROM drive. If at anytime you wish to cancel the installation, click Cancel before the installation reaches 100%. Canceling the installation before it reaches 100% will not install any Icewind Dale II files onto your system.- Recommended: This option installs the minimum requirement as well as some additional files to the hard disk. More disk space will be used but this may reduce loading times. Install recommended if you plan to play single and multiplayer games. The recommended installation will require 1.05GB of disk space.
- Minimum: This option installs the minimum number of files to your hard disk. Less hard disk space will be used, but loading times may be longer. Install minimum if you plan to only play single player games and want to conserve hard disk space. The minimum installation will require 700MB of disk space.
After this, a window entitled "Select Components" will appear. In this window, you can choose to either install, or not install the following options: Create a desktop shortcut icon and Install DirectX 8.0 (15MB). Icewind Dale II requires that DirectX 8.0 or later is installed to play the game. If you do not have at least DirectX 8.0 installed on your machine, you must install it so make sure the checkbox next to "Install DirectX 8.0" is checked before you continue.
Before the installation is finished you will be given the option to View Readme, or Run Icewind Dale II Configuration. If you wish to perform either of these actions at that time, make sure the box is checked to the option you would like to use. Once you have selected the actions you would like to perform, if any, click Finish.
Icewind Dale II uses a virtual memory caching system which makes use of extra hard drive space when system memory is running low. For best performance, we recommend that Virtual Memory be handled by Windows. Windows handles virtual memory by default. It is also very beneficial to regularly defragment your hard drive, as fragmentation can result in poor disk performance.
There are three basic ways to uninstall Icewind Dale II:
1) Choosing the Uninstall option from the autorun menu on the Icewind Dale II Disc.
2) Choosing the Uninstall option that is located in the Start Menu, in the “Black Isle” program group.
3) Removing Icewind Dale II using Add or Remove programs in the Control Panel.
1) Choosing the Uninstall option from the autorun menu on the Icewind Dale II Disc.
For the autorun menu to appear, simply insert either of the Icewind Dale II discs into
your CD/DVD-ROM drive and the autorun menu will appear. If this does not appear,
please move onto one of the other options below for uninstalling. When Icewind
Dale II is installed, the Uninstall option will no longer be grayed out on the
autorun menu. Just select the Uninstall option and follow the easy steps to
uninstall Icewind Dale II from your computer.
2) Choosing the Uninstall option that is located in the Start menu, in the “Black Isle” program group.
To uninstall the game using the program group in the Start menu simply follow
the easy steps below.

5) Highlight Icewind Dale II
6) Click the Add/Remove button (If you are using Windows XP, click Change/Remove)

The Icewind Dale II Config program can be accessed in two places. The first is in the “Black Isle” Program Group in your Start Menu. The second place will be in your game’s root directory (Default C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Icewind Dale II) and just double click the “Config.exe” to run the Config program.
These various options can be found within the three tabs:
| General: | From this tab, you are able to modify the difficulty level and very quickly modify program options that are based on the hardware in your computer system to achieve optimal gameplay for your computer system. |
| Game: | You are able to modify many of the program and game options on this tab. For more information regarding what an option will change, simply hover your mouse cursor over the option and help text will be displayed at the bottom of the config program. |
| Graphics: | You are able to customize the graphics options in the game, from screen resolution, to various other graphics features that can potentially help optimize gameplay. For more information regarding what an option will change, simply hover your mouse cursor over the option and help text will be displayed at the bottom of the config program. |
If there is anything that you are having problems with or cannot find in the manual, stop by the official Icewind Dale II Website at http://icewind2.blackisle.com/. Aside from cool game materials and information, you may be able to find an answer for whatever question you might have on the official Black Isle Studios Message Boards. On the Black Isle Studios Message Boards you will find forums such as: Icewind Dale II General Feedback, Icewind Dale II Tips and Tricks, and Icewind Dale II Troubleshooting. If you aren’t already registered, all it takes is a few minutes and you can be communicating with fellow Icewind Dale II fans as well as Black Isle employees.
Custom Portraits:
The measurements for player portraits are 42x42 pixels for the smaller portraits (8-bit color runs faster but it can be up to 24 bit color), and 210x330 pixels for the larger portraits. To use a custom portrait, place it in the Portraits directory (in the install directory for the game) and add an S to the end of the small portrait name and an L to the end of the large portrait - otherwise the two names must be identical. The names must be 1-7 letters long, maximum - so the filename with the S or L added to the end is no longer than 8 total characters. The portrait files must be in BMP format.
For example:
XXXXXXXS.bmp for small (42x42, 8-bit)
XXXXXXXL.bmp for large (210x330, 24-bit)
For multiplayer, each player must have a copy of the portraits; otherwise they will see a blank icon instead of the other player's custom portraits. You will need to manually send these portraits to your friends as IWD2 has no method of transferring them.
Custom Sounds:
In the Sounds folder of your game's installation is a file called sndlist.txt. This text file details information on how to make custom sounds for your characters in Icewind Dale II.
Updates: If necessary, patches may become available for the product that add functionality or correct bugs. These updated versions can be found at the official Icewind Dale II website.
RULES
Experience Points in 3rd Edition: One of the new rules in Icewind Dale II is how your
characters accrue experience points (XP). If you are killing creatures
that are much weaker than you are, you will gain little to no XP for killing them. However, if
you kill a creature that is much more powerful than your character(s), you will get a
great deal of XP. While playing the game if you notice that you did not receive XP for
killing a particular creature, chances are that its threat level is below yours.
Multiclassing: With 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons rules allowing a player to add new classes to his character as he progresses in levels, this provides the player with a near infinite variety of possible class combinations in Icewind Dale II. For this reason, Icewind Dale II only officially supports 3 class combinations per character. Although it is very likely that you will not encounter problems when multiclassing your character more than 3 classes.
3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons: To learn more about Dungeons & Dragons, please visit the Wizards of the Coast website. Recommended reading includes the Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide available at book retailers everywhere.
General
Disable System Tray Programs: For users are unfamiliar with system tray, these programs are located at the bottom right of your task bar to the left of the time. If a program is running in your system tray, an icon will be in your system tray representing the program. For instance if your virus scanning program is running in the background you will see that icon in your system tray.
Virtual Memory: WE DO NOT RECOMMEND ADJUSTING YOUR VIRTUAL MEMORY unless you fully understand how virtual memory affects your computer. Icewind Dale II will eagerly use up any Virtual Memory (hard drive) and non-Virtual Memory (RAM) you allocate to it. If you choose to add more memory to your system, or increase the size of your Windows swap file, the game speed MAY increase. However, as you increase your Virtual Memory, expect longer clearing times to remove this 'Virtual Memory' from the hard drive after the game is terminated.
Running Programs in Background: We recommend that while playing Icewind Dale II, all other programs are closed. Programs that are running in the background could cause the overall game performance to decrease.
Graphics
Translucent Shadows: In the options menu under “Graphics”, turn off all translucent shadows. Turning this off will cause all shadows to appear solid, rather then blending a dark shadow onto the background.
Translucent Animations: In the options menu under “Graphics”, turn off translucent animations. This will make all spell animations solid, which is not as nice looking, but it can significantly speed up the game for slower systems during large spell-based combat.
Static Animations: In the options menu under “Graphics”, turn off static animations. This will stop things like torch flame or animated water from being drawn. This should result in a speed increase. The increase can add anywhere from 5-15 frames per second on older systems.
Brightness/Contrast: Adjusting the default settings for these options (located in the options menu under “Graphics”) can result in a performance hit. If you find the game is too dark, we recommend adjusting your monitor’s brightness.
DirectX Hardware Calls: In the options menu under “Graphics”, there are three toggles for various 'BLTS'. Enabling these can result in a performance hit (while for some systems, a performance gain.) We recommend enabling these only if you have graphics glitches that you have been unable to resolve.
The following list describes the known graphics glitches and which call should be disabled to fix them.
| Disable | For |
| Software Transparent BLT- |
-green boxes surrounding any object in the game -a box surrounding mouse cursor |
| Software Mirror BLT- |
-animations appearing “reversed” -Fog-of-War appears in a “checkerboard” pattern -Fog-of-War has “spiky” edges |
| Software Standard BLT- |
-vertical lines down the game screen -the game Cursor leaves “artifacts” of itself on the game screen -any other non-resolved graphics problem |
Windowed Mode: If the game is run in Windowed Mode on your desktop, there is a chance that the overall game performance will decrease. We recommend running the game in Full Screen.
Audio
Character Movement Sounds: In the options menu under “Sound/Character Sound”, turn off Character Movement Sound. Turning this option off will disable the movement sounds your character makes, such as footsteps.
Audio: Turning off any of the audio can result in a possible performance increase. Moving the sliders in the options menu under “Sound” all they way to the left will completely disable the playing of the audio that slider adjusts.
KNOWN PROBLEMS
Graphic Errors: Some older video cards may experience graphics glitches while playing
the game. These problems can be caused by DirectX Hardware Calls to your video
card that are not functioning. Software renderers for all of these calls have
been written to allow people to play even with drivers that are not 100% compatible
with the DirectX standards. You should enable a software renderer for these
calls if you have the most recent drivers for your video card and are still
experiencing problems. Using the software renderer will probably fix the graphic
glitches but can result in a performance hit. The options are available in
the options menu under “Graphics.”
NT 4.0 Screen-Saver: While running under Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3, we have experienced intermittent problems with Screen Savers. You can disable screen savers while playing Icewind Dale II by running the Configuration program and selecting the "Disable Screen Savers" under the Options tab.
24-bit color mode: Some Matrox video cards, particularly the G400, can have slow down problems when running in 24-bit color mode. It is highly recommended that the game is run in 16-bit or 32-bit color if you experience slowdowns or graphics problems. Problems can include flickering cursors, slow mouse response, and other graphical performance issues.
Path Finding: If you have a full party of 6 characters, you may notice that the last two characters in the default formation may tend to stray away from the party on occasion. A possible solution to this problem is using different party formations, as this may decrease the frequency of the path finding problem. The "follow" formation in particular is one of the formations that tends to fix this problem. On faster systems, bumping up the number of Path Nodes in the config program can increase path finding accuracy.
Aureal Sound Cards: Some testers with Aureal sound cards have experienced sound errors and glitches while testing with EAX turned on. If you experience problems with audio with one of these cards, we recommended disabling EAX in the options menu.
Windows Compatibility Mode: In Windows 2000 and Windows XP, shortcuts for programs can be made to run in "Compatibility Mode" for older Windows operating systems. It is highly recommended that this feature not be enabled for use with Icewind Dale II. If you experience problems running the game and get an "Assertion Failure" message box, verify that compatibility mode is not on by right-clicking the "Icewind Dale II" shortcut, selecting the Compatibility tab, and verfiying that the checkbox labeled "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" is not enabled.
Non-walkable spaces: If you are experience a problem where your character(s) seem to be stuck behind an invisible barrier, save your game, then load that saved game and your characters should be able to move about freely.
Multiplayer
Multiplayer Connection: For users playing multiplayer through TCP/IP, it is recommended that the host use a broadband (cable modem / DSL) connection. Having the host playing via broadband connection helps increase multiplayer performance.
Windows 95a: Icewind Dale II requires a minimum of 175MB free to run a game in multiplayer. Due to this requirement, Icewind Dale II may not be compatible with Windows 95a for multiplayer gameplay. Windows 95a will only support a maximum hard drive size of 2GB, which unfortunately will not be enough after Icewind Dale II is installed onto the hard drive due to install sizes sizes (Minimum - 700MB, Recommended - 1.05 GB, and Full - 1.5 GB).
Winsock 2: Icewind Dale II also requires that Windows Socket 2 ("Winsock2") or greater is installed. For users that have Windows 95, you will need to download this file from Microsoft in order to play multiplayer games. NOTE: If you have a newer Windows operating system (such as Windows 98, Me, 2000 or XP), you do not need to install this.
Playing behind a proxy server:
- To play Icewind Dale II through a proxy server, you have two different options to choose from: 1) All of the players are behind the proxy server, or 2) Only one person behind the proxy server, with the other players in the multiplayer game outside the multiplayer server.
- You must also set up the proxy server to work with the DirectX networking protocol (called DirectPlay). Make sure you have the following ports, 2300-2400 and 47624 setup on the server correctly as “inbound” and “outbound” messages on both “TCP” and “UDP” protocols.
Summoned and Charmed Creatures: If you save Icewind Dale II with summoned creatures, when you reload they will be controlled by the host. If you charm a creature, the charmed creature will be controlled by the host.
Multitasking: It is strongly recommended that you do not multi-task during multiplayer games. This can cause slowdown in the multiplayer game, and also cause game problems for other people in the game. If your multiplayer game is minimized, this will cause some discrepancies in the multiplayer game for other people.
Failure to Connect:
- Icewind Dale II will sometimes display a "Connection Failed" message when you are attempting to connect and are suffering from slow ping times. This could happen as often as 1 in 4 times if your ping time is greater than 500ms. Try again and you should connect.
Matrox Video Cards: Some Matrox video cards, specifically the G400 users have reported that multiplayer games cannot be started or even crash the game. We highly recommend that you have the latest drivers installed. Please visit Matrox's website to check for latest drivers.
IPX Protocol Selection: If you don't have an IPX protocol selected the IPX protocol may show up as available because of the way the game checks for the protocol in DirectX 8.0. You will not be able to start a game without actually having the protocol however, and you will receive an error. If you receive an “unable to connect” message, please check all of your protocols to make sure they are installed correctly.
Character Doesn't Appear: In a multiplayer game, if the host is controlling more than one character, and Alt-Tab's during an area transition, the secondary character(s) will not appear until the host restores the game. This cannot be resolved as the character data cannot be transferred to other game machines if the host machine is not active.
Spell Casting Animations: Some testers reported periodic 1-3 second discrepancies in spell casting animations from the host and client machines in the game.
If you are having problems that can’t be solved from the information above, please visit the official Black Isle Studios Message Boards for additional help. We have a forum dedicated to Icewind Dale II troubleshooting, and Black Isle employees view the board regularly offering advice and assistance when possible.
