System Requirements Required: Pentium II (or compatible) 233 MHz 32 MB RAM Windows 95 with DirectX 7.0 or later 600 MB of Hard Drive Space (add'l 200 for Heart of Winter) 4X or faster CD-ROM DirectX Certified Video Card with at least 4 MB of video RAM DirectX Certified Sound Card Keyboard, Mouse Recommended: Pentium II (or compatible) 266 MHz 64 MB RAM 900 MB (or more) of Hard Drive Space (add'l 600MB for Heart of Winter) 8X (or faster) CD-ROM NOTE: For multiplayer gameplay, it is highly recommended that you install Heart of Winter using the 'Full' installation option. 2MB vs 4MB+ Video Cards: While you can still run Icewind Dale with a 2MB video card, we recommend against it - performance will be very poor. We do not support 2MB cards in an official capacity. Icewind Dale requires a 4MB card and we recommend that you obtain the latest DirectX drivers for your video card, direct from the company that makes your card. WINDOWS NT 4.0 / WINDOWS 2000: Although Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 are not supported in an official capacity, Icewind Dale can be run correctly under Windows NT 4.0 if the following conditions are met: You will need at least 64 MB of RAM and for Windows NT 4.0 users, you must have Service Pack 3 or later installed. If you wish to run multiplayer, then Service Pack 4 is required. Slow downs during gameplay have been reported under NT as well as various sound problems. If you do not have Administrator rights on your system, the option to install MPlayer will not appear during the installation of Icewind Dale. If you wish to install MPlayer, please run the "MPlayerInstaller.exe" file located in the folder named MPlayer on the Icewind Dale CD1. If you experience trouble with sound in Windows NT, you can enable the option "Windows NT Smooth Sound" in the Config program, which should yield better results. This feature is not useful under any OS except Windows NT 4.0. 1b. Installation HEART OF WINTER NOTE: Heart of Winter requires the original Icewind Dale to be installed on your system. If it is not installed, please see instructions below for installing it. Once Icewind Dale has been installed, insert the "Heart of Winter" disc into your CD-ROM drive. See the Heart of Winter manual on page 4 for more details. Please note: If you uninstall Heart of Winter, you will also uninstall Icewind Dale. Your saved games are not uninstalled however. ICEWIND DALE Insert the CD-ROM labeled Icewind Dale Disc 1 into your CD-ROM drive and follow the onscreen instructions. If your autorun is disabled, find the AUTORUN.EXE application in the root of Disc 1 and double click to launch the Installer. After installing Icewind Dale, you will have options for installing DirectX 7.0. If you do not have DirectX installed, or have a version older than 7.0, install DirectX 7.0 when prompted during the installation process. If you obtain a newer version of DirectX, it is recommended that you use the newer version. Icewind Dale uses a virtual memory caching system which makes use of extra hard drive space when system memory is low. You should regularly defragment your hard drive, as fragmentation can result in poor performance. 1c. Electronic Registration Please take a few moments to fill out the Electronic Registration for Icewind Dale. Your feedback will make you eligible for special offers and promotions, and it also provides us with information we need in order to make better games. We'd appreciate your time. 1d. Running Icewind Dale If you use the default installation settings for Icewind Dale, it will be installed in a 'Black Isle' Program Group in your Start menu. 1e. Icewind Dale Config The Icewind Dale Config program will be located in your program group. This application will allow you to set the various hotkeys for the game as well as set up several other options. The config program has been rewritten for Heart of Winter. The various options are contained within four tabs: General: You can set the Difficulty level and modify program options based on the hardware in your computer system to achieve optimal gameplay. Game: You can modify many of program and game options on this screen. Simply hover the mouse pointer over the option, and help will be displayed in the box at the bottom of the program. Keyboard: You can modify the default hotkeys on this screen. Hotkeys are broken out into several groups, which can be selected along the left hand side. The right hand side will update with hotkeys that are relevant to the currently selected group. Graphics: This screen allows you to customize graphics options in the game, from setting the resolution, to enabling 3D mode, to modifying specific graphic features to help optimize gameplay. 1f. Icewind Dale Web Page If there is anything that you are having problems with or cannot find in the manual, stop by the Icewind Dale Web Page at http://www.interplay.com/icewind. Aside from cool game materials and errata, you may be able to find an answer for whatever question you might have. 1g. Icewind Dale on GameSpy and MPlayer Icewind Dale and Heart of Winter are available for online play via the GameSpy Arcade multiplayer matching service. For more details, please check out GameSpy Arcade's website at http://www.gamespyarcade.com. Recently, MPlayer was purchased by GameSpy, and at the time of this writing, it is unknown if Heart of Winter will be available for play via MPlayer. Manual Addenda HEART OF WINTER ADDENDA Entering Expansion From Icewind Dale You will not be able to travel to the new areas of the expansion if you have returned to Easthaven. Once you finish Icewind Dale, you may import your characters into a new 'Expansion Only' game. Virtual Memory in Windows Icewind Dale requires virtual memory to be enabled in Windows. You will experience problems, including crashes, if virtual memory is not enabled. Never fear however, by default virtual memory is enabled in Windows. Characters Automatically Exported During the end game sequences, your characters are automatically exported by the game. When you have reached the end of Icewind Dale, your characters will be exported as "IWDx", where x is the slot number the character was in before the battle. For Heart of Winter, the characters are exported as "IWDHOWx". Note: Unlike the original Icewind Dale, this is done BEFORE the end fight, to ensure that your characters can retain their items should they die. The drawback is that experience and treasure acquired after the fight is not saved in these exported files. You can however export them manually after the final Heart of Winter fight. ICEWIND DALE MANUAL ADDENDA Modifying Character Biographies You can modify your characters Biographies by typing them into the Biographies window during Character Creation or by accessing them from Customize in the Character Record screen. Wheel Mouse Support Most menus in the game which have scrolling capabilities support wheel mice. By placing the cursor over the menu and scrolling with the roller button, as in normal Windows use, you can scroll the menu. Characters and Save Games from Baldur's Gate While Icewind Dale uses the same engine as Baldur's Gate, exported characters and save games from Baldur's Gate are NOT compatible with Icewind Dale. Using either of these within Icewind Dale can cause minor to major problems including crashes. Raise Dead and Resurrection Scrolls Raise Dead and Resurrection Scrolls work only in the area in which the character actually died. Casting these spells will work anywhere within the game when memorized. Items in the Game World If you leave items on the ground in the game world, they will disappear after a period of time (with a few key items as exceptions). Bodies will begin to decay from the world after about half a day. Items will begin to decay from the world after a day or two. The decay represents the effects of scavengers and other folk. If you want to stash items, put them inside any container; for example, a chest, bookshelf, or box. Reputation Your characters have reputation in the game. This stat is kept track of behind the scenes and if you perform evil actions, your reputation will go down. If your reputation gets low enough, Rangers and Paladins will lose their special status and become Fighters. Fallen Paladins and Rangers will not be able to specialize in weapons as a consequence of losing their Ranger or Paladin status. It is impossible to regain your lost abilities once this happens. Reputation can also affect the prices at which stores buy and sell items from you. Item prices in stores. Item prices in stores vary according to how many items of that type they carry, character reputation, and charisma. If you sell many of a certain type of item to a store, the price of the item will drop because the storekeeper's demand for the item decreases. Modal actions for characters If your AI button is turned ON you may notice your character's modal abilities turn OFF occasionally. Modal abilities are those abilities that you can turn on and leave on. These modes can be turned off when a script action occurs for that character. If this is causing problems for you, you can either load "None" as the script for your character or click the "AI on/off" button (on the main game screen at the lower right) to toggle this. Reading dialog stored in the buffer In many cases, you may want to scroll up through the dialog in the text window. If you find that game messages are interfering with this (the window will reset to display new messages), hold down the left mouse button while using the slider thumb. While the left mouse button is depressed, you will not be returned to view the new messages. Outputting Journal Text You can output the contents of your journal to a text file by hitting CTRL-S to dump the current chapter or CTRL-A to dump the entire journal while in the journal screen. This text file will appear in the \mpsave directory where you installed Icewind Dale in the folder of the last saved or last loaded save game. Outputting Character Record Text You can output the statistics of your player characters to a text file using the OUTPUT TEXT FILE button in the Character Record Screen. The manual should have noted that the text file will be written into your \mpsave directory where you installed Icewind Dale in the folder of the last saved or last loaded save game. Dialog window resizing in multiplayer When another player initiates dialog in a multiplayer game, the window will resize to fit the text that comes up. When the other player finishes dialog, the dialog window will resize to what it was before, unless you were typing a chat message in, in which case it will stay in medium or large mode (in which the chat line is present). Dual Classing - Required Attributes When you dual class a character, you must possess the attributes required to be able to dual class to that new class. If you do not see the class that you wish to dual class to in the available classes (i.e., it is dimmed out), then this means that your character does not possess the required attribute(s) for that class. See the manual for complete information and restrictions to dual classing. Gore You can adjust the Gore setting in Options-Gameplay. Turning this off will turn off blood and 'chunky-death' animations in the game. Multiplayer games will use the Gore-Off setting if any of the players have Gore turned off when the game is started. After the multiplayer game has been started however, there will be no option to change the Gore setting, even if a user with Gore-Off joins a Gore-On game. Multiplayer Timeout Settings The server (and only the server) can adjust the timeouts for all clients in multiplayer by manually editing the Icewind.ini file. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS FOR THE NOVICE! however, if you wish to increase or decrease the timeout settings, then adjust the line "ClientTimeout=X" under "[Multiplayer]" in the Icewind.ini file, setting X to whatever seconds value you wish (the default is 150 seconds, so X=150 initially). 2c. Corrections to the Manual Manual Corrections HEART OF WINTER Wizard spell progression tables for 21+ level wizards has been corrected. This status makes the caster less able to correctly cast spells. There is a chance that spells cast while 'deaf' will completely fail. Phasing This condition can be cured with a Cure Disease spell or an item with similar effects (e.g. Mummy's Tea) Adjustments to Spell Descriptions Many of the spells in Icewind Dale were tweaked or changed after the manual was completed. The in-game descriptions for the spells do reflect the changes which are listed here: Aid - duration is 1 round + 1 round/level Animal Summoning I - duration is 5 turns Animate Dead - spellcaster can animate up to 1 hit dice/level of undead Anti-Magic Shell - actually prevents any spells cast on or by the caster Call Lightning - does 2-16 + 1-8/level damage Chaos - has a 20-foot radius, duration is 1 round/level, casting time is 5 Chromatic Orb - this spell tops out at the 5th to 6th-level effect which deals 1-12 damage and stuns the target for three rounds. All higher level effects where removed. CloudKill - has a 15-foot radius, duration is 1 turn Creeping Doom - duration is 1 turn Death Fog - duration is 15 rounds Death Spell - has a 30-foot radius Decastave - drains hit points on every strike, not just the first Emotion: Courage - duration is 5 turns Emotion: Fear - duration is 5 rounds Emotion: Hopelessness - duration is 1 turn Emotion: Hope - duration is 5 turns Fire Storm - has a 25-foot radius Flame Blade - duration is 4 rounds + 1 round/level Flame Strike - targets the area, not a specific creature Ghoul Touch - does not require a to-hit roll Glyph of Warding - addendum to spell description: Resting or leaving the area the Glyph of Warding is in will make it disappear harmlessly. Hold Animal - has a 20-foot radius Hold Monster - has a 20-foot radius Hold Person - duration is 1 round/level of the caster Insect Plague - has a 25-foot radius, duration is 15 rounds Invisibility Purge - affects everyone in the current area Mass Invisibility - has a 30-foot radius Mental Domination - does not require the priest to be within range and does not prohibit him from casting other spells Mind Blank - works only on the caster Protection from Fire - does not actually have different effects depending on who the recipient of the spell is Remove Fear - has a 30-foot radius, duration is 1 turn Rigid Thinking - area of effect is any one creature Skull Trap - has a 10-foot radius of damage Skull Trap - addendum to spell description: Resting or leaving the area the Skull Trap is in will make it disappear harmlessly. Spike Stones - has a 15-foot radius, duration is 15 rounds Static Charge - does 2-16 + 1-8/level damage Stinking Cloud - duration is 1 turn Strength - description should read as follows: Upon application of this spell the target's strength is magically increased by an amount depending on its class. Clerics and Thieves gain 1-6 points, Fighters gain 1-8 points, and Mages gain 1-4 points. For Fighters only, all points above a strength of 18 are converted into a 10% bonus for each extra point, to a maximum of an 18/00 strength. For other classes 18 strength is the maximum. Sunray - description should read as follows: Sunray (Evocation,Alteration) Level: 7 Sphere: Sun Range: Sight of Caster Duration: 4 rounds Casting Time: 4 Area of Effect: 15-foot radius Saving Throw: None This spell allows the caster to evoke a dazzling beam of light from the sky that lasts 4 rounds. Creatures in the area of effect must make a saving throw vs. spells or be blinded for 1-3 rounds. Undead or fungoid creatures in the area of effect also take 8-48 points of damage (half damage if they make a saving throw vs. spell). Symbol of Hopelessness - duration is 2 turns, save is at -2 penalty Web - duration is 15 rounds 2d. Design Notes NPCs are sometimes removed from the game world. NPCs in the game often need to become inactive to preserve the integrity of the storyline. These characters will attempt to leave the current area they are in via an exit. If they cannot find one, we remove them from the map and they effectively vanish. This is not a bug - just how we have dealt with the need to remove them. NPCs initiating dialog with Invisible/Stealthed characters. You will find that some NPCs in the game will initiate dialog when you should not be seen by them. In order to ensure that the player receives all critical game dialog, all game critical dialog will be received. Items transferred to the ground. If your character's inventory is full, and an NPC gives you an item, you will be given a message that the NPC gave you the item and a message that your inventory is full and the item has fallen to the ground. You will have to find space in your inventory and pick it up manually. Trolls Trolls will not die unless they are killed with fire or acid. PCs and summoned monsters may continue to attack a troll once it has been knocked unconscious because their AI does not recognize that the troll is not dead. You should manually instruct them to attack different targets. Multiplayer Dialogue In multiplayer games, all players must see all dialogue. This is to ensure that all players don't miss any critical game dialogue or lose sync with other players. =========================================================================== 3. TROUBLESHOOTING 3a. Tweaking Performance Increasing Performance: 1. Translucent Shadows. In the options menu under 'Graphics', turn off translucent shadows. Turning this off will cause all shadows to appear solid, rather than blending a dark shadow onto the background. 2. Translucent Animations. In the options menu under 'Graphics', turn off translucent animation. This will make all spell animations solid, which is not as nice looking, but it will speed up the game. 3. Static Animations. In the options menu under 'Graphics', turn off static animations. This will stop things like torch flame or animated water from being drawn. This should result in a speed increase. 4. Character Movement Sounds. In the options menu under 'Sound/Character Sound', turn off Character Movement Sounds. 5. Other Audio. Turning off any of the audio will result in a performance increase. Moving the sliders in the options menu under 'Sound' all the way to the left will completely disable the playing of these sounds. 6. Virtual Memory. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND ADJUSTING YOUR VIRTUAL MEMORY. Icewind Dale will eagerly use up any Virtual Memory (hard drive) and non-Virtual Memory (RAM) you allocate to it. If you choose to add more memory to your system, or increase the size of your Windows swap file, the game speed MAY increase. However, as you increase your Virtual Memory, expect longer clearing times to remove this 'Virtual Memory' from the hard drive after the game is terminated. Things that will Decrease Performance: 1. Brightness/Contrast. Adjusting the default settings for these options (located in the options menu under 'Graphics') will result in a performance hit. If you find the game is too dark, we suggest adjusting your monitors brightness. 2. DirectX Hardware Calls. In the options menu under 'Graphics' there are three toggles for various 'BLTS'. Enabling these will result in a (sometimes drastic) performance hit. We recommend enabling these only if you have graphics glitches that you have been unable to resolve. 3. Running the game in Windowed Mode. Running the game in a Window on your desktop will decrease the overall game performance. 3b. Known Problems Sound Errors Some testers with Aureal sound cards experienced sound errors and glitches while testing with EAX turned on. We recommend not using EAX if you are using an Aureal sound card. Graphic Errors Some video cards may experience graphics glitches while playing the game. These problems are caused by DirectX Hardware Calls to your video card that are not functioning. Software renderers for all of these calls have been written to allow people to play even with drivers that are not 100% compatible with the DirectX standards. You should enable a software renderer for these calls if you have the most recent drivers for your video card and are still experiencing problems. Using the software renderer will probably fix the graphic glitches but WILL result in a performance hit. The options are available in the options menu under 'Graphics'. The following list describes the known graphics glitches and which Call should be disabled to fix them. Disable: For: Software Transparent BLT- -green boxes surrounding any object in the game -a box surrounding mouse cursor Software Mirror BLT- -animations appearing 'reversed' -Fog-of-War appears in a 'checkerboard' pattern -fog-of-War has 'spiky' edges Software Standard BLT- -vertical lines down the game screen -the game Cursor leaves 'artifacts' of itself on the game screen -any other non-resolved graphics problem 3dfx VOODOO VIDEO CARDS Icewind Dale does not support any of the 3dfx Voodoo series of cards in 3D mode. If you run the game using 3D mode using a Voodoo, you may experience white screens, lock ups, or other problems. MATROX VIDEO CARDS Some Matrox G400 users have reported that multiplayer games cannot be started or even crash the game. We highly recommend that you have the latest drivers installed. Please visit Matrox's website at http://www.matrox.com. Matrox cards, particularly the G400, have slow down problems when running in 24-bit color mode. It is highly recommended that the game be run in 16-bit or 32-bit color on these cards. Problems include flickering cursors, slow mouse response, and other graphical performance issues. Minimizing Icewind Dale If you minimize Icewind Dale using either Alt-Enter or Alt-Tab (and then bring it back up by left clicking on the minimized application), the sound effects for the game will stutter, loop, and skip. This is caused by a lack of resources available to Icewind Dale after you go from full screen to a minimized screen, and it will correct itself after a short period of time. If you minimize Icewind Dale and then bring it back up, the game may run more slowly for a time - this is caused by the game re-accessing resources that become tied up by minimization. Running the game in a window may result in lower performance overall. 'Always On Top' Programs In most cases when Icewind Dale is run while other programs with an 'always on top' feature are running, the other program will interfere with the graphics of Icewind Dale. If you are going to play Icewind Dale, we recommend closing any of these programs or switching off the 'always on top' feature. Quick Weapon Switching If you use Range scripts for your characters, they will switch to their most powerful melee weapon. This may cause your character to change from one melee weapon to another under certain circumstances. Most powerful melee weapon is the one delivering the most damage. CD-ROM Issues Certain CD-ROMs may have a problem installing Heart of Winter that will result with the error message "IDMain.exe is not a valid win32 application". To resolve this issue, select the "no read ahead" option for your CD-ROM. To do this right click on "My Computer" and go to Properties. Select the tab "Performance" and go to the "File System..." select the CD-ROM tab, and go to the pull down box "Optimize access pattern for: 'No read-ahead'." Multiplayer: Summoned and Charmed Creatures If you save Icewind Dale with summoned creatures, when you reload they will be controlled by the host. If you charm a creature, the charmed creature will be controlled by the host. Failure to Connect Icewind Dale will sometimes display a "Connection Failed" message when you are attempting to connect and are suffering from slow ping times. This could happen as often as 1 in 4 times if your ping time is greater than 500ms. Try again and you will connect. IPX Protocol Selection If you don't have an IPX protocol selected the IPX protocol may show up as available because of the way the game checks for the protocol in DirectX 7. You will not be able to start a game without actually having the protocol however, and you will receive an error. If you receive an 'unable to connect' message, please check all of your protocols to make sure they are installed correctly. Proxy Servers If your Internet connection is through a Proxy Server, Icewind Dale may not be able to connect to other Multiplayer games. Try disabling Winsock 2 support (use Winsock 1.X instead) and this MAY help. Minimizing Icewind Dale During Loading or Play Using Alt-Tab to minimize Icewind Dale during Game Creation or Area Loading may cause the application to either hard lock or terminate. If possible, don't do this. Using Alt-Tab or minimizing Icewind Dale during play will cause all other players to pause and can create sync errors if left unattended for extended periods of time. Character Doesn't Appear In a multiplayer game, if the host is controlling more than one character(s), and Alt-Tabs during an area transition, the secondary character(s) will not appear until the host restores the game. This cannot be resolved as the character data cannot be transferred to other game machines if the host machine is not active. Running Windows in less than 16-bit color (65536 colors). Icewind Dale will give you an error if you attempt to run it in either 16 color or 256 color mode. On some low end systems we have experienced crashes of the game executable when returning to Windows. This shouldn't cause any problems, but we recommend against running the game if you are ever in 16 color or 256 color mode. NT 4.0: Screen-Saver While running under Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3, we have experienced intermittent problems with Screen Savers. You can disable screen savers while playing Icewind Dale by running the Configuration program and selecting the "Disable Screen Savers" under the Options tab. 3c. Updates If necessary, patches may become available for the product that add functionality or correct bugs. These updated versions will be made available at the Interplay site at http://www.interplay.com. =========================================================================== 4.
